Oh, Dear. Singer Taylor Swift Is Getting More Political (August 2019)

Update Below – Kid Rock criticized Taylor Swift for going Political

In an older post on my blog, I noted how thrilled I was that Swift – known for singing pop songs – was keeping any political opinions she may have had to herself.

In the past year or two, that has certainly changed. It seems she’s getting even more political in the last few months.

A word here for any “Swifties” (die hard Swift fans – a lot of hard-core fan bases these days can be very toxic): I do not have anything against Taylor Swift. I do not hate Ms. Swift, and I wish her the best.

My general preference, though, is for celebrities to stick to entertaining and not opine publicly about politics.

Taylor Swift Talks Trump, Katy Perry and Her LGBT Support

Taylor Swift covers a lot of ground in Vogue’s sprawling September cover story, which published today. In addition to providing a sneak preview of her forthcoming album, “Lover,” and lots of self-analysis on fame, she spoke about the motivations behind her support of the LGBTQ community, sexism, President Trump and her reunion with Katy Perry.

New Woke Taylor Swift Has Issue With ‘White Cisgender Males’

Taylor Swift seems to be looking for a new reputation as leftwing savant and the singer has definitely put in a good effort, working hard to slam conservative perspectives ever since coming out against Tennessee Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn in the November Midterm elections less than a year ago.

In that short period she’s gone from knocking Blackburn’s platform of hate to now brutally slamming “white cisgender males” in Vogue’s September 2019 issue.

Well, fine, Taylor, but aren’t you currently dating one?

…Swift has no intention of slowing down on her pro-LGBTQ activism. The cat’s clearly out of the bag, as is her cynical opinion of straight white males. In response to Vogue asking her, “Why get louder about LGBTQ rights now?” the mega-pop star claimed, “Rights are being stripped from basically everyone who isn’t a straight white cisgender male.”

Taylor Swift breaks her silence on why she didn’t endorse Hillary Clinton in 2016

The pop star breaks her silence on her 2016 election … silence … in a Vogue cover story for the September issue

….“By her own admission, Swift has been ‘reluctant’ to voice her political opinions in the past, but, she said in an Instagram post, ‘due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now,’” Gonzalez wrote.

And now, in a Vogue cover profile for the magazine’s storied September issue, Swift has explained her silence during the 2016 election — a decision that was met with some criticism as other celebrities, including erstwhile rival Katy Perry, used their platforms to advocate for Hillary Clinton.

“Unfortunately in the 2016 election you had a political opponent who was weaponizing the idea of the celebrity endorsement,” Swift told Vogue. “He was going around saying, ‘I’m a man of the people. I’m for you. I care about you.’ I just knew I wasn’t going to help.”

She continued: “Also, you know, the summer before that election, all people were saying was, ‘She’s calculated. She’s manipulative. She’s not what she seems. She’s a snake. She’s a liar.’ These are the same exact insults people were hurling at Hillary. Would I be an endorsement or would I be a liability? Look, snakes of a feather flock together. Look, the two lying women. The two nasty women. Literally millions of people were telling me to disappear. So I disappeared. In many senses.”

Swift is referring to the backlash she suffered over her public argument with Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West, which left her “cancelled” in the minds of many music fans. Admittedly, the situation was winding and complicated — as I wrote about in July, in light of Swift’s ongoing feud with music producer Scooter Braun.

….In “You Need To Calm Down,” which was released in June, Swift tells homophobes quite literally to “calm down.” The music video isn’t without flaws; as journalist Logan Roper wrote, the portrayal of those who oppose equal rights solely as rural trailer park residents reinforces narrow minded stereotypes about Appalachia. But it was also praised for its call to viewers to donate to GLAAD.

LGBTQ celebrities including Ellen DeGeneres, Todrick Hall, the cast of “Queer Eye,” RuPaul, and Laverne Cox participated in its filming.

Earlier that month, Swift had written an open letter to Tennessee’s Republican Senator Lamar Alexander in support of the Equality Act.

The bill is an expansion of the Civil Rights Act that prohibits employers from discriminating against anyone because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. She wrote: “The fact that, legally, some people are completely at the mercy of the hatred and bigotry of others is disgusting and unacceptable.”

Update: August 11, 2019

A day or two ago, rock singer Kid Rock criticized Taylor Swift on his social media account for getting political.

Last year, it was Joy Behar. Now, the ever-polarizing Kid Rock is going after pop superstar Taylor Swift in a crude, misogynistic tweet that questions the singer’s motivations for getting political.

“Taylor Swift wants to be a democrat because she wants to be in movies….period,” the 48-year-old Nashville resident tweeted Friday.

“And it looks like she will suck the door knob off Hollyweird to get there. Oldest move in the book. Good luck girl.”

Kid Rock, Who Slut-Shamed Taylor Swift, Is a Rich-Kid Poseur Who Grew Up on a $1.3 Million Estate

Excerpts:

The Confederate flag-brandishing “rapper” who randomly accused Taylor Swift of sleeping her way to the top in Hollywood has been living a lie.

…The digital grunt [i.e. Kid Rock’s tweet about Taylor Swift] came a day after Swift addressed her long-held and oft-criticized political silence for the first time. Swift, who appears on the cover of Vogue’s September issue, told an interviewer that she’d withheld a political endorsement in 2016 not because of her significant conservative and alt-right-leaning fan base, but because then-candidate Trump had “weaponized” the idea of the celebrity endorsement.

…Rock has long presented himself as a rough-and-tumble country guy who does average-Joe-guy stuff like shoot guns, trap hogs, and dunk on hippies. He often talks about his path to success as a scrappy blend of self-taught skill, business savvy, and persistence. “I was a hustler from a young age,” Rock told Cowboys & Indians in 2015.

But what gets lost in that portrait is the fact that Rock’s humble origin story took place on a luxurious estate in wealthy Macomb County, Michigan. Rock, whose real last name is literally “Ritchie,” grew up the son of millionaire William “Bill” Ritchie, who owned several lucrative car dealerships, and Susan Ritchie, who instilled in Rock “a spirit of philanthropy.”

They raised Rock, who once claimed to be “straight out the trailer,” on six well-groomed acres, where he could pick fresh apples from his family’s personal orchard.

…According to the Detroit Free Press, Rock’s father also owned a second home in Jupiter Island, Florida, down the road from Celine Dion and Tiger Woods.

For her part, Swift also came from significant wealth. She grew up on a Christmas tree farm near Reading, Pennsylvania. Her mother worked in finance; her father, as Lizzie Widdicombe wrote in the New Yorker, is “a descendant of three generations of bank presidents” and “a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch.” Her parents moved to Nashville to support her burgeoning music career, and even bought stock in Big Machine, the label which later signed Swift.
